About
Vitis vinifera is a woody, deciduous liana native to the Mediterranean Basin and south-west Asia, growing by climbing over supports or trees using tendrils. In a food forest, it occupies the vertical climber layer, optimising three-dimensional space with the production of edible fruits and leaves. Its seasonal foliage also plays a crucial role in microclimate regulation, providing protective shade in summer and allowing light to pass through in winter.
