A Vitis vinifera é uma liana lenhosa e caducifólia originária da bacia do Mediterrâneo e do sudoeste asiático, desenvolvendo-se ao trepar por suportes ou árvores através de gavinhas. Numa floresta comestível, ocupa o estrato vertical das trepadeiras, otimizando o espaço tridimensional com a produção de frutos e folhas comestíveis. A sua folhagem sazonal desempenha ainda um papel crucial na regulação do microclima, proporcionando sombra protetora no verão e permitindo a passagem de luz no inverno.
