About

Small tree or large thorny shrub of the hawthorn genus, cultivated since antiquity for its fruit. Azaroles are small, edible, bittersweet pomes, eaten fresh or in preserves. In agroforestry systems, it forms part of the lower canopy layer, featuring nectar-rich blossom and fruit useful for human consumption and wildlife.
