Árvore caducifólia robusta nativa da região mediterrânica, muito resistente à seca e à poluição. Desempenha o papel de árvore de dossel ou quebra-vento, atraindo aves com os seus pequenos frutos doces. É uma espécie valiosa na consolidação de solos e criação de microclimas.
